Midnight Oil | Beds Are Burning
So the victory isn’t even six hours old and already I’m seeing people talking about how feminists need to stop celebrating the defeat of SB5 because of all the other shit going down.
Obviously there is a ton of shit going down but I also think it’s pretty weak to be like “DON’T CELEBRATE THIS VICTORY BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE IS STILL SCREWED.” I’m so tired of this attitude that you cannot stop to mark a victory until all victories have been won. It’s like people who encounter news of progress and immediately point out all of the ways in which that progress fell short. It’s a recipe for burnout because all you are ever going to see is everything that is wrong with the world and you will never see anything that is right.
Celebrating a victory is good for the mental health of activists and progressives. There is always going to be a ton of work to be done, but victories don’t come every day, and so it’s worth taking a moment to celebrate them when they do happen.
Senator Wendy Davis is a fucking badass.
There’s this bill that they are trying to pass in Texas that would make it illegal to get any abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, and would make it very difficult for abortion centers to continue doing what they do. Governor Rick Perry has already said that if the bill makes it to his desk, he will sign it. And Wendy Davis said fuck no that is not happening.
So she’s filibustering it. That means she asked to talk on the subject at 11:18 this morning, and if she can continue talking about abortion until 11:59 tonight, the bill won’t reach Governor Perry, and they would have to start all over with the bill next time they meet 2 years from now.
But Wendy has to keep talking. She can’t pause for even a minute, not for food or a sip of water or to go to the bathroom or sit down. She can’t even lean up against anything, or she’s out. So she’s wearing motherfucking PINK NIKE TENNIS SHOES in the middle of the state senate.
She also has to continue talking about the topic. She sent out tweets an other messages last night asking for anyone and everyone’s abortion story, and received a shit load of answers. Her staff is still collecting them, and she’s reading them aloud to the senate. Not only is she making this bill impossible to pass, she may just change some minds while she’s at it.
This is history, guys. Wendy Davis is a motherfucking badass, and we are watching it happen.
She’s putting on for my state and city! Yehyuh!
four more years of this
If you missed it last night, President Obama told the story of “Fired up! Ready to go!” at the final rally of his final campaign.
Oh, man. This was wonderful. Obama tells stories like I tell stories, with lots of details, so this is several minutes long. Worth it, though.
Hi Tumblr, it’s me, a slightly older person…
I see a lot of you 20 somethings saying things about how you aren’t going to choose the lesser of two evils and that their policy on important matters are identical so what’s the point they’re both stooges for Wall Street and the Industrial War Complex.
You are right. Kind of.
I know y’all LOVE the 90’s. Me too. And I remember after after eight years of Clinton/Gore, I thought those motherfuckers were the devil. I was soooooooooooo upset with Bill Clinton waving his deregulation wand and his fucked foreign policy that I was all FUCK THE DEMOCRATS and I strongly advocated for Raplh Nader, even though he too didn’t really care about my “gonad politics.” Even when not choosing between the “lesser of two evils,” I was STILL having to compromise major issues.
Having been an adult person through 8 years of Clinton/Gore and 8 years through Bush/Cheney, I can tell you without a shred of hesitation that I will line up like my ass is on fire to vote for the lesser of two evils because the greater of two evils almost had us all living outside and eating dog food.
And if you think that a Romney presidency won’t be worse than Bush/Cheney, you are out of your mind.
I am fucking begging all of you, please, go vote. Aside from the fact that far more dangerous things are happening on your local level, (like collective bargaining being taken away in Illinois) this shit does matter.
If you think voting for Obama is the lesser of two evils, you’re wrong, it’s the lesser of three because not voting IS voting for Romney. Not voting is voting for dickbag judges that sentence people to jail in counties that have privatized prisons for minor drug infractions. Not voting is voting to remove pensions and collective bargaining and the last shreds of union power from the people. Not voting this election is voting for Feudalism.
Now pardon me, there’s some damn kids on my lawn and they want candy.
Bold emphasis is placed by me.
What a beautiful person. I need to go back to college so I can be that articulate.
